Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) was initially part of the Third Coast Guard District which covers the whole area of Mindanao.

In August 1984, pursuant to Headquarters Philippine Coast Guard (HPCG) General Order Nr 57, CGDSEM was activated as one of the major units of the Philip-pine Coast Guard in the area of Southeastern Mindanao initially consisting of five Coast Guard stations covering Surigao del Sur, Region XI and parts of Region XII.

It was renamed as Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) on 18 October 2000, considering its geographical location.

Presently, Coast Guard Southeastern Mindanao covers the municipalities of Carrascal, Surigao Del Sur, Sarangani and Davao Occidental in a 1,747 kilometers shoreline, 370 coastal barangays and 85 minor ports.

The Coast Guard stations under CGDSEM are Coast Guard Station (CGS) Davao and CGS SOCSARGEN with eight sub-stations each, CGS Davao Oriental with three sub-stations, CGS Surigao Del Sur with four sub-stations, and CGS Davao Occidental with five sub-stations and CGS Island Garden City of Samar (IGACOS) with three sub-stations respectively.
