On 23 January 1983, the fifth Coast Guard district was created pursuant to General Orders Nr 2 of the Philippine Navy, to execute functions and to uphold strategic maritime operations as well as in the coastlines. It was officially activated as a unit of the Philippine Coast Guard on 17 March 1983.
Originally located at Coast Guard Station Farola in Binondo, Manila the Headquarters was transferred to its present location in Barangay Sta Clara, Batangas City on 26 February 1984.
It was on 18 October 2000 that the fifth Coast Guard district was renamed as Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog pursuant to HPCG Memorandum Circular Number 13 dated 18 October 2000.
The area of responsibility of CGDSTL covers the provinces of Batangas and Quezon in the CALABARZON Region IV-A and the provinces of Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque and Romblon in MIMAROPA Region IV-B, with a total of 1,879.65 kilometers of coastline.
CGDSTL supervises six Coast Guard stations (CGS) namely CGS Batangas, CGS Southern Quezon, CGS Oriental Mindoro, CGS Northern Quezon, CGS Occidental Mindoro and CGS Romblon.
A total of 45 Coast Guard Municipal sub-stations, two mobile posts and 100 lighthouse stations are strategically located in the districts area of responsibility.
